The World Has Gone to Sh*t

The last year on earth has been one hell of a journey. There is of course the elephant in the room, Covid-19, but this is only one of the hundreds of things that have changed, f***ed up or happened. The environment really IS dying, racism IS killing thousands of innocent people and misogyny HAS corrupted the UK.

In the last year, the modern world has experienced a slap in the face. We have finally been made aware of how shit the world really is. Those of us lucky enough to be privileged, haven’t had to experience these things first-hand and therefore we have been ignorant. Fortunately, the global movements that have taken place have meant everybody has finally had to have a tough conversation with themselves. Of course, some people won’t but it is then our responsibility to educate those who choose to remain ignorant.

The death of George Floyd sparked what is arguably the biggest social movement in history, Black Lives Matter. But until 25th May 2020, was the world just turning a blind eye to racism or have we simply finally been exposed to what is really going on?

Despite these questions which will ultimately expose the sad truth that a lot of humans are selfish by nature, we must be optimistic and focus on the positive side.

This worldwide change in attitude doesn’t just apply to racism. Misogyny, particularly in the UK has been exposed for how big of a problem it is, in the wake of the death of Sarah Everard. It should not take the deaths of so many innocent people for us to open up our eyes, but at least it has, now we must take what we have learnt and move forward.

The youth of western society seem to be partially responsible for this huge cultural shift which seems to have impacted every corner of the world. Social media and a completely different attitude means that genuine change is taking place. Protests and action against the climate crisis, racism, police brutality and sexism have seen genuine reactions from people in power. By no means are all of these issues fixed but we have definitely seen the start of it.

We need to be more aware of prejudice, toxicity and hate that is taking place in this world, hold those responsible accountable and move on together and not let it tear us apart. We can do it.
